Cervical Cancer

Cervical CancerCervical cancer, a malignant tumor that occurs in the cervix, is the most common gynecological malignant tumor in the female reproductive tract. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main risk factor for the disease. When exposed to HPV, the body's immune system usually prevents the virus from causing harm. But in a few people, the virus can survive for several years, causing certain cervical cells to become cancerous. The risk of cervical cancer can be reduced by regular screening and HPV vaccination. The cure rate of early cervical cancer is high.

Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

The following tests can be used to diagnose cervical cancer:

Cervical cytology and HPV test. This test can find cervical precancerous lesions and cervical cancer cells. But many women have HPV and do not have cervical cancer, so an HPV test alone is not enough to diagnose cervical cancer.

Colposcopy. Use its magnification function to further discover cervical lesions.

Cervical biopsy. Remove the tissue from the abnormal part of the colposcopy and send it to the pathology department to make a pathological section for histological diagnosis. This is the gold standard for diagnosing cervical cancer.

Imaging examination. When necessary, vaginal ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET-CT, etc. can be done as needed to determine the size, location, and extent of the tumor and pain, so as to further understand whether the tumor has metastasized and the location of the metastasis.

Serum tumor marker examination. The tumor markers of cervical cancer are usually the serum squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC) and cytokeratin fragment 211 (CYFRA211). These tests are helpful for the diagnosis and follow-up of cervical cancer.
