Chronic Renal Failure

Chronic Renal FailureChronic renal failure (CRF), also known as uremia, refers to chronic progressive renal parenchymal damage caused by various reasons, resulting in significant renal atrophy and unable to maintain its basic functions. The clinical manifestations are retention of metabolites, water, electrolyte, acid-base balance disorders, as well as systemic involvement of various systems. From the onset of the primary disease to the beginning of renal insufficiency, the interval can be from several years to more than ten years. The etiology of chronic renal failure mainly includes primary glomerular disease, diabetes, nephropathy, hypertension, etc. This disease requires attention to limit the intake of sodium, protein, potassium, and phosphorus.

Diagnosis of Chronic Renal Failure

There are several diagnostic methods for chronic renal failure:

  • Blood test. Including blood routine and blood biochemistry. The main purpose is to check blood hemoglobin, creatinine, urea nitrogen, serum cystatin C, electrolytes and hydrogen carbonate, as well as parathyroid hormone, vitamin D3 and so on. When the level of metabolic wastes such as urea nitrogen and creatinine increases, it indicates renal insufficiency. Serum creatinine increases, indicating a decrease in endogenous creatinine clearance (Ccr) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
  • Urine test. There may be different degrees of hematuria, proteinuria, tubular urine, and decreased urine specific gravity.
  • Imaging tests. Including ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MRI and isotope examinations. It can show the size, shape and even function of the kidney, as well as whether the renal artery is stenosis, whether the urinary tract is blocked.
  • Kidney biopsy. Chronic renal failure is not an indication for kidney biopsy. But when it is necessary to differentiate from acute renal damage and the kidney has not shrunk, the kidney biopsy is an important means of identification.
