Varicella

VaricellaChickenpox is an acute infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which can cause symptoms such as systemic macules, papules, herpes, and scabs. This disease is more common in children, and will naturally stop or self-healing at a certain stage. The disease is extremely contagious and can be spread through droplets through the respiratory tract or direct contact with the local mucosa after entering the body and multiplying, but it does not have infectiousness after scabs. Most patients can form antibodies in the body after recovery, and no longer be infected with varicella, but the latent virus in the body later activated can cause shingles. Immune insufficiency, newborns, pregnant women, and long-term oral corticosteroids are high-risk groups of varicella virus infection. If a pregnant woman suffers from varicella, her fetus may be infected and cause deformities.

Diagnosis of Varicella

There are several ways to test varicella:

  • Electron microscopy. Take fresh herpes fluid for electron microscopy. Herpes virus particles can be seen, which can be quickly distinguished from variola virus.
  • Routine blood test. The total number of white blood cells is normal or increased, and the percentage of lymphocytes may be increased.
  • Serological test. The most commonly used test is the complement fixation test. Complement fixation antibodies appear in the serum of patients with varicella 1-4 days after the eruption. Fluorescent antibody method can also be used for detection.
  • PCR method. The detection of viral DNA in nasopharynx secretions is a sensitive and rapid method of early diagnosis.
  • Herpes scrape or tissue biopsy. Fresh varicella is scraped, and examined by Gimsa staining for multinucleated giant cells and by acid staining for inclusions.
