Hashimoto's Disease

Hashimoto's DiseaseHashimoto's disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is a chronic autoimmune disease with thyroid tissue as antigen. It is the most common thyroid inflammation in the clinic, and more common in middle-aged women, and the prevalence age is 40 to 50 years old. The most typical clinical manifestations of Hashimoto's disease are symptoms related to goiter and hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's disease occurs because the immune system produces autoantibodies that attack the thyroid. Some thyroid follicular cells are destroyed, resulting in insufficient thyroid hormone secretion. In order to maintain the normal function of the body, the undamaged thyroid follicular cells compensate for proliferation to produce more thyroid hormone. When the thyroid loses its compensatory ability and appears hypothyroidism, it indicates that 90% of the thyroid follicles have been destroyed.

Diagnosis of Hashimoto's Disease

The diagnosis of Hashimoto's disease depends on the patient's physical signs and symptoms, as well as blood test results. The specific detection methods include:

  • Physical examination. If you have symptoms such as fatigue, dullness, dry skin, constipation, hoarseness, and goiter, you need further examination for Hashimoto's disease.
  • Blood test. With the progression of the disease, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) increases, and FT3 and FT4 are still in the normal range. After entering the thyroid function decline period, FT3 and FT4 both decreased, and TSH increased.
  • Antibody test. Serum thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) titers increased significantly, which are the most meaningful diagnostic indicators.
  • Thyroid fine-needle puncture cytology. The examination is less traumatic, and can show medium or large lymphocyte infiltration pathologically.
  • Imaging diagnosis. Including thyroid ultrasonography, thyroid radionuclide imaging and so on.
