Celiac Disease

Gluten-freeCeliac disease is an immune response to gluten intolerance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in the small intestine. Over time, this reaction damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing nutrients. Intestinal damage usually causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, anorexia, bloating and anemia, etc., and may cause serious complications. Celiac disease mostly occurs in young childhood and adolescents, and it is more common in women. There is no cure for the disease, but for most people, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet can help control symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

Diagnosis of Celiac Disease

The diagnosis methods of celiac disease include the following:

  • Blood routine. The patients are manifested as macrocytic anemia, there are also normal red blood cell or mixed anemia. Serum potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium may all decrease. Plasma albumin, cholesterol and phospholipids and prothrombin may also be reduced. In severe cases, serum folate, carotene and vitamin B12 levels are reduced.
  • Serological examination. The serological examination is based on IgA, including gliadin antibody (AGA) and tissue-type antibodies such as anti-reticulin antibodies (ARA), EMA, and tTG antibodies. Positive serological antibodies support the diagnosis of most celiac disease and play an important role in the screening and follow-up process.
  • Genetic test. Almost all patients with celiac disease have HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 gene abnormalities. If the genetic tests for human leukocyte antigen, HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 are all negative, celiac disease can be excluded.
  • Small intestine biopsy. It is the gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease, and endoscopy is the easiest way to obtain the small intestinal mucosa.
