Zika Virus Infection

Zika Virus InfectionZika virus is spread through mosquito bites, and symptoms after infection are similar to dengue fever, including fever, rash, joint pain, headache, and conjunctivitis. Only about 20% of people infected with Zika virus will show mild symptoms, and those symptoms usually disappear in less than a week. However, if a pregnant woman is infected, the fetus may be affected, leading to neonatal microcephaly and even death. Zika virus was first discovered in Africa in the 1940s and then spread to Southeast Asia, Pacific island countries and the Americas. Since the Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the virus can be found all over the world, the outbreak of the virus is likely to spread to more countries.

Diagnosis of Zika Virus Infection

Zika virus infection is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms and epidemiological history, such as mosquito bites, or travel to areas where Zika virus is known to exist. The disease can be diagnosed quickly by testing the Zika virus antigens and antibodies in serum or plasma. However, because Zika virus cross-reacts with other flaviviruses such as dengue fever, West Nile virus and fiebre amarilla, the diagnosis by serological methods may not be accurate. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)  as well as blood virus isolation and culture can diagnose Zika virus infection. Within 7 days of onset, if the Zika virus RNA is detected in the peripheral serum, the diagnosis can be confirmed.
