Measles

MeaslesMeasles is an acute respiratory disease caused by measles virus infection. It is a self-limited disease and highly contagious. It is prone to spread in densely populated areas where vaccines are not commonly available. Typical measles symptoms usually include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, oral measles and mucosal spots. The first symptoms appear 3 to 5 days after the systemic maculopapular rash, and the fever is higher during the rash. Most of patients can get lifelong immunity after illness. Common complications include pneumonia and laryngitis, etc. Measles patients are the only host and source of infection, and the virus spreads through the respiratory tract.

Diagnosis of Measles

There are several methods to test and diagnose measles:

  • Clinical diagnosis. The clinical manifestations of measles include red red maculae and papules all over the body, fever above 38°C, cough or upper respiratory tract catarrhal symptoms, Koplik's spots on the oral mucosa, and skin rashes spreading from behind the ears to the whole body. The measles can be diagnosed initially through the above symptoms.
  • Blood test. Measles IgM antibody is detected in serum without measles live attenuated vaccine in one month. An increase in the titer of measles IgG antibody to more than four times during the recovery period can also be used as a diagnostic basis.
  • Throat swab examination. The throat swab specimen showed positive measles virus nucleic acid.
  • Urine test. Measles virus nucleic acid in urine is positive or measles virus can be isolated.
