Hepatitis E

Hepatitis E is an acute infectious disease caused by infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV), mainly with liver damage, fatigue, loss of appetite, oil disgust, and abnormal liver function as the clinical manifestations. Most of the hepatitis E epidemic is related to drinking water contaminated by feces. Hepatitis E is a self-limited infection, which usually resolves on its own within 4-6 weeks. Severe cases may develop fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure), leading to the risk of death. The treatment of this disease is generally based on proper rest and reasonable nutrition, selective use of drugs as a supplement. The prevention of hepatitis E mainly adopts comprehensive measures to cut off the transmission route.

Diagnosis of Hepatitis E

Specific serum etiological tests are the basis for the diagnosis of hepatitis E, which can be detected by the following methods:

• Enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Detection of anti-HEV IgM in the serum is an indicator for the diagnosis of acute hepatitis E.
• Protein blot test (WB). This method is more sensitive and specific than the ELISA method, but the operation is more complicated and the detection time is longer.
• Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It is used to detect HEV-RNA in the serum and feces of patients with hepatitis E. This method has high sensitivity and specificity. However, false positive results may occur due to laboratory contamination in the process of operation.
• Immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) and immunofluorescence (IF). They are used to detect HEV particles and HEV antigen (HEAg) in feces, bile and liver tissue of patients with hepatitis E. However, these two methods require special equipment and technology, and the positive rate is low, so they are not suitable for routine examination.
