Giardiasis

Giardia lambliaGiardia lamblia is a protozoan belonging to the class of flagellates. It is mainly parasitized in the small intestines of humans and certain mammals. Giardiasis is a protozoal disease caused by Giardia lamblia parasitizing in the human small intestine. The main clinical manifestations of this disease are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension, and can cause cholecystitis, cholangitis and liver damage. Giardia trophozoites are firmly attached to the mucosa of the duodenum and proximal jejunum, then reproduce. The released parasites quickly transform into cysts resistant to the external environment. The cysts are transmitted by fecal-oral route after fecal discharge, and water-borne infection is the main source of infection of Giardiasis.

Diagnosis of Giardiasis

Giardiasis can be diagnosed in the following methods:

  • Pathogen detection. Giardia lamblia can be found in stool samples, duodenal drainage, intestinal mucus or biopsy tissues of the patients.
  • Antibody test. Based on the culture of Giardia lamblia, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and indirect fluorescent antibody assay are used to detect the patient's serum antibodies.
  • Antigen test. Enzyme-linked immunoassay (double-sandwich method), dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent test, convection immunoelectrophoresis and other methods can be used to detect antigens in fecal dilutions. This method can be used not only for diagnosis, but also for observing curative effects.
  • Molecular biology diagnosis. Using polymerase chain reaction to detect the Giardia lamblia ribosomal RNA gene product, it can detect an amplified copy of trophozoite genomic DNA, and radiolabeled chromosomal DNA probes can also be used to detect trophozoites and cysts. Molecular biology methods have high specificity and sensitivity.
  • Other checks. Abdominal B-ultrasound to understand the liver and gallbladder conditions should also do X-ray and ECG examination.
