Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

MERS-CoVThe Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a rare but serious respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus. It was first discovered in the Middle East in 2012 and is most common in the region. Fever, dry cough, and dyspnea are the main clinical manifestations, which then develop into pneumonia and dyspnea. It is highly infectious, has a wide range of epidemics and a high mortality rate. The sources of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome infection include dromedaries and humans and dromedaries may be the intermediate host. At present, the possibility of bats or other animals as the host of the pathogen of this disease is not excluded. Usually, Middle East respiratory syndrome can be cured, and some patients will have repeated infections and the condition is more stubborn.

Diagnosis of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

There are several diagnostic methods for the Middle East respiratory syndrome:

  • Routine blood test. It can be seen that the total number of white blood cells is not high, accompanied by a decrease in lymphocytes and platelets.
  • Blood biochemical examination. Some patients may have elevated creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatinine.
  • Viral nucleic acid detection. The MERS-CoV is isolated from respiratory specimens. The serum MERS-CoV antibodies in the convalescent phase are positive or more than 4 times higher than those in the acute phase.  It can be used for early diagnosis. In the early stage of the onset, timely collection of multiple specimens (throat swabs, nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal or tracheal extracts, sputum or lung tissue, as well as blood and stool) for testing can increase the detection rate.
  • Imaging examination. Chest X-ray examination shows that almost all cases have abnormal chest radiographs. Lesions on both sides of the lung and unilateral lung lesions can be observed.
