Listeriosis

Listeriosis is an acute infectious disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Most patients are infected when immune function is low, mainly in newborns, the elderly, pregnant women, and immunodeficiency patients. There are three species of Listeria, and only Listeria monocytogenes can cause human infections. Common symptoms include chills, sore throat, cramping abdominal pain, as well as meningeal irritation such as headache, dizziness, fever, and neck stiffness. Clinically, the most common listeriosis is meningitis, followed by bacteremia with no localized manifestations.

Diagnosis of Listeriosis

There are several methods to detect listeriosis:

• Blood routine. The total number of white blood cells in patients often increases, and the number of neutrophils in the classification is increased.
• Cerebrospinal fluid routine. The cerebrospinal fluid of patients with meningitis is mostly turbid in appearance, the number of white blood cells is abnormal, 2/3 are multinucleated cells, the protein content is increased, and the sugar content is decreased.
• Bacteriological examination. The bacteriological examination is the key to the diagnosis of this disease. Including steps such as bacterial smear and bacterial culture.
• Serological examination. The antibody response to Listeria is mainly due to the increase of IgM antibodies. The double serum antibody titer is helpful for diagnosis, but the serum antibody test is of limited value in the diagnosis of this disease and is only used for epidemiological research.
• Molecular biological tests. In recent years, nucleic acid hybridization and PCR have been used in clinical diagnosis with strong sensitivity.
• Imaging tests. Including chest x-rays, electrocardiogram, B-ultrasound and brain CT.
