Enteritis

EnteritisEnteritis refers to the intestinal inflammatory response caused by various reasons such as microbial infection, ischemia, radiation or immune disorders. Enteritis is mainly characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms, manifested as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stools and fever, etc. In severe cases, it can cause dehydration and electrolyte disorders, and even threaten life. Enteritis is divided into acute and chronic according to the duration of the disease. The course of chronic enteritis is generally more than two months. Different types of enteritis have different etiologies. Common causes include infection, immune abnormalities, and radiation therapy. The disease can occur at all ages, and most patients with enteritis can be cured.

Diagnosis of Enteritis

The diagnosis methods of enteritis mainly include the following:

  • Blood test. An increase in the number of white blood cells, and the rate of erythrocyte sedimentation. Elevated lactoferrin, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), suggesting that it is in an active phase of inflammation. When cytomegalovirus (CMV) or Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is suspected, serum CMV-1gM, EBV-1gM and related nucleic acids can be tested.
  • Stool tests. Routine examination of patients with infectious enteritis showed white blood cells, red blood cells, or a positive occult blood test indicates gastrointestinal bleeding. When infectious enteritis is suspected, the fecal pathogen test is feasible. When Clostridium difficile infection is suspected, it can be confirmed by culture, toxin detection and nucleic acid PCR.
  • Film degree exam. Including CT, MRI, angiography, mesenteric vessel CT, angiography and so on.
  • Other checks. According to the different lesions, choose enteroscopy, colonoscopy, and rectoscopy. If lesions are found under endoscopy, a few lesions can be further taken for pathological examination.
