Hepatitis C

Hepatitis CHepatitis C is an infectious disease caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, mainly liver damage. It is mostly spread through blood transfusion, acupuncture and drug use, etc. According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, the global HCV infection rate is about 3%, it is estimated that about 180 million people are infected with HCV, and about 35,000 new cases of hepatitis C occur every year. Hepatitis C is a global epidemic, with mild acute symptoms, mainly fatigue, and nausea. In severe cases, it can lead to liver chronic inflammatory necrosis and fibrosis, and some patients can develop into cirrhosis or even hepatocellular carcinoma. In the next 20 years, the mortality rate associated with HCV infection will continue to increase, which will cause great harm to the health and life of patients, and it has become a serious social and public health problem.

Diagnosis of Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C can be detected by the following methods:

  • Liver function test. Patients with hepatitis C related symptoms such as jaundice, fatigue, liver area pain, etc., should undergo liver function tests. This test is the result of a venous blood test.
  • Anti-HCV detection. In high-risk groups of hepatitis C virus infection, fatigue and other clinical manifestations, or unexplained increase in transaminase, should be tested for anti-HCV in serum. If anti-HCV is positive, HCV RNA or HCV core antigen should be further tested to determine whether there is hepatitis C virus in the body.
  • HCV RNA detection. The ribonucleic acid of the hepatitis C virus, the genetic material of HCV, is a direct indicator of HCV infection in vivo. At present, the PCR method can directly detect HCV-RNA in blood, which can be used for early diagnosis of HCV infection.
  • Imaging test. The commonly used imaging diagnostic methods include abdominal US examination, CT and MRI.
