Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis refers to the non-infectious inflammation of the nasal mucosa in atopic individuals that is mainly caused by the release of IgE-mediated mediators (mainly histamine) after exposure to allergens, and involves a variety of immunologically active cells and cytokines. The main symptoms of allergic rhinitis are paroxysmal sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching and nasal congestion. Allergic rhinitis is a global health problem, affecting about 500 million people worldwide. The symptoms of the disease can be controlled by drugs and standardized treatments, but there is no way to cure the disease so far.

Diagnosis of Allergic Rhinitis

There are three main diagnostic methods for allergic rhinitis:

• Physical examination. Check whether the patient has symptoms such as eyelid swelling, conjunctival congestion, dark red, light blue or pale nasal mucosa, edema, turbinate enlargement, small nasal polyps, and watery or mucus-like secretions in the nasal cavity. Lung auscultation for wheezing sounds, if there is, it may be accompanied by asthma.
• Skin prick test. After a small amount of allergy trigger is pierced into the skin of the arm or upper back, anaphylaxis will be observed. If allergic, a raised bump will occur in the allergen area.
• Serum specific IgE detection. The patient's venous blood is extracted for immunological testing, which is not affected by drugs or skin conditions. The diagnosis of allergic rhinitis requires the history of clinical manifestations, skin punctum test and serum specific IgE test results to be taken into consideration. This test measures the number of allergy-causing antibodies in the blood.
