Mucormycosis

MucormycosisMucormycosis is caused by a naturally occurring fungus-mucor, in the environment. It is a rare but potentially serious disease. It is characterized by mycelium invading blood vessels, causing thrombosis, tissue ischemia and necrosis, and causing lesions in the nose, brain, digestive tract, and respiratory tract, with a serious prognosis. Mucormycosis may cause redness and pain in the eyes and nose, along with symptoms such as fever, headache, cough, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it may also cause damage to the maxilla and even blindness. With the continuous expansion of the immunodeficiency population and the widespread use of antifungal drugs, the incidence of mucormycosis is increasing. People with low immunity are susceptible to this disease. Pathogen fungi are mainly spread through air, dust and diet, and are highly infectious.

Diagnosis of Mucormycosis

The diagnosis of mucormycosis is mainly based on clinical manifestations, predisposing factors, course of the disease, fungal examination, and pathological tissue sections. It is the most diagnostic significance to find wide and unseparated hyphae in the blood vessel wall. The detection comes from upper turbinate scrapers, sinus aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, sputum, and biopsy specimens. If multiple examinations are of the same type of mucor, it is of diagnostic value.
