Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid ArthritisRheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly regards its normal joint tissue as a threat and attacks it, causing a series of inflammatory reactions in tissues such as cartilage, synovium, ligaments, and tendons. It is characterized by multi-joint, symmetrical and aggressive joints of the hands and feet, often accompanied by involvement of extra-articular organs and positive serum rheumatoid factor. In the early stage of the disease, the joints manifested as morning stiffness, swelling, pain, etc., and finally joint deformities and loss of normal joint function. Rheumatoid arthritis is difficult to cure, and the main purpose of its treatment is to respond to the painful joint inflammation and inhibit the development of the disease.

Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis

There are several diagnostic methods for rheumatoid arthritis:

  • Routine examination. Including blood tests, urine tests and other tests, to observe whether white blood cells, platelets or hemoglobin are abnormal. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis may have mild or severe anemia, with a faster active erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and increased C-reactive protein (CRP).
  • Autoantibody examination. Most of the patients will present positive antibodies such as anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies, rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-mutant citrulline vimentin antibodies, anti-perinuclear factor (APF) and recessive rheumatoid factor (HRF). The increase of immunoglobulin and the increase of early IgG are of reference significance.
  • Imaging examination. Including X-ray, ultrasound MRI and other examinations, which are used to assess joint structural damage, monitor disease activity and progress, and detect early rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Other tests. Including joint puncture, joint synovial biopsy. Arthrocentesis is for joints with joint cavity fluid. Related tests include synovial fluid culture, rheumatoid factor test, and anti-CCP antibody test. The joint synovial biopsy is of great value in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
