Typhoid

Typhoid fever is an acute intestinal infectious disease caused by Salmonella typhi. Typical symptoms include persistent high fever, abdominal pain, hepatomegaly, and low white blood cells. Some patients have rose rash and relatively slow pulse. In severe cases, indifference and slow reaction may occur. Typhoid fever carriers and patients are the only source of infection. The disease is mainly transmitted through the fecal-oral route, contaminated water and food can cause outbreaks.

Diagnosis of Typhoid

Typhoid can be detected by the following methods:

• Blood routine. The number of white blood cells decreased, the proportion of lymphocytes increased relatively, and eosinophils decreased or disappeared.
• Serum agglutination test. The titers of antibodies corresponding to Salmonella typhi bacteria antigen O and flagella antigen H in the patient's serum can be determined. If the above-mentioned antibody titers increase by more than 4 times during the recovery period, it can assist in the diagnosis of typhoid fever.
• Salmonella typhi culture. Positive blood and bone marrow cultures have diagnostic significance, and the positive rate of bone marrow culture is higher than that of blood culture. A positive stool culture can also confirm the diagnosis.
• Pathological examination. Roseola shows telangiectasia and mononuclear cell infiltration under the microscope, and sometimes typhoid bacilli can be seen.
