Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal CancerEsophageal cancer refers to malignant tumors derived from esophageal epithelium. It is mainly manifested as choking and foreign body sensation when swallowing food, retrosternal pain or obvious dysphagia. If metastasis or infringement of adjacent organs occurs, pain and corresponding discomfort of the involved organs may occur. Esophageal cancer is mainly divided into two types, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, and it is the sixth most common cause of cancer death in the world. The etiology of esophageal cancer is complicated, and it is generally believed to be related to nitrosamine compounds, long-term smoking and drinking, eating too hot or mildew food and other reasons.

Diagnosis of Esophageal Cancer

There are three types of relevant diagnostic methods for esophageal cancer:

  • Endoscopy. Including ordinary white light fiber endoscopy, pigmented endoscopy, ultrasound endoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, etc.
  • Imaging Diagnosis. Air-barium double contrast radiography--the most direct and simple way to diagnose esophageal cancer. CT--one of the better methods to judge the stage and prognosis of esophageal cancer. MRI—superior to CT in showing the local tissue structure of esophageal cancer lesions, which can more effectively assess tumor stage. Ultrasound examination--mainly used for the observation of metastatic tumors in cervical lymph nodes, liver, kidney and other places. PET-CT--has high sensitivity and specificity in the detection of esophageal cancer lesions.
  • Laboratory examination. Routine laboratory tests include blood routine, liver and kidney function examination, coagulation function examination, etc. In addition, tumor markers should be tested. Tumor markers such as CYFRA21-1, CEA, SCC, and TPS are commonly used for the auxiliary diagnosis, prognosis judgment, radiotherapy sensitivity prediction and efficacy monitoring of esophageal cancer.
