Encephalitis

EncephalitisEncephalitis refers to the inflammatory lesions caused by the invasion of the brain parenchyma by pathogens. Most of the etiology is viruses, but it can also be caused by infections such as bacteria, molds, spirochetes, rickettsiae, and parasites. Others may be allergic diseases, such as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Usually, the so-called encephalitis refers to viral encephalitis. According to the course of the disease, encephalitis can be divided into acute, subacute and chronic. According to the pathogenic microorganisms, it is divided into bacterial, fungal, viral, etc. According to the epidemic situation, it is divided into epidemic and sporadic. Encephalitis can occur in different genders and ages, and is clinically characterized by symptoms such as high fever, headache, vomiting, coma, convulsions, and most of them are accompanied by changes in cerebrospinal fluid composition. The prevention and treatment should be carried out according to different causes.

Diagnosis of Encephalitis

There are several ways to check for encephalitis:

  • Blood and cerebrospinal fluid examination.Use enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or PCR method to detect pathogens in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. In addition, cerebrospinal fluid can reflect the changes in the metabolism and function of central nervous system cells and tissues, detect the changes in white blood cells and protein content in cerebrospinal fluid, and find the pathogens leading to encephalitis.
  • Brain biopsy. Take the patient's viable tissues and pass the immunofluorescence examination and histopathological examination to provide the basis for the final diagnosis.
  • Imaging test. CT or MRI of the head can show the location and characteristics of brain lesions.
  • EEG test. The results of an electroencephalogram (EEG) test can show changes related to the disease.
