Leukemia

LeukemiaLeukemia is a kind of hematopoietic stem cell malignant clonal disease, which is stagnated at different stages of cell development due to the uncontrolled proliferation of leukemia cells, the disorder of differentiation, and the obstruction of apoptosis. In bone marrow and other hematopoietic tissues, leukemia cells proliferate and accumulate in large quantities, causing normal hematopoiesis to be suppressed and infiltrated into other organs and tissues. The clinical manifestations include anemia, bleeding, infection, fever, lymphadenopathy and bone pain, etc. According to the degree of differentiation and maturity and the main cell series involved, leukemias can be divided into acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, hairy cell leukemia and so on.

Diagnosis of Leukemia

The following are the diagnosis methods of leukemia:

  • Blood routine. Abnormal levels of platelets and white blood cells can be seen.
  • Blood biochemical tests. Leukemia patients will experience increased transaminase, serum uric acid concentration, uric acid excretion, and serum lactate dehydrogenase.
  • Bone marrow biopsy. Take bone marrow samples from the bones to look for leukemia cells through laboratory tests, and determine the future treatment plan through the characteristics and types of leukemia cells.
  • Cytochemical staining. This is an important part of morphological diagnosis and can be used to distinguish acute myeloid leukemia from acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
  • Immunophenotyping examination. Using flow cytometry, the patient’s bone marrow or peripheral blood samples are used to detect the characteristic antigen expression patterns of leukemia cells through a variety of specific antibodies, so as to identify the source of leukemia cells and determine their unique phenotypes. It plays an important role in clarifying the type of leukemia, and it also has irreplaceable clinical value in the detection of post-treatment efficacy.
