Diarrhea

DiarrheaDiarrhea is a common disease, which refers to the frequency of defecation is significantly higher than usual, the water of the feces increases, the daily defecation volume exceeds 200g, or it contains undigested food, pus, blood, and mucus. Diarrhea is often accompanied by symptoms such as urgency to defecate, anal discomfort, and incontinence. Diarrhea occurs when the amount of fluid entering the colon exceeds or decreases the absorption capacity of the colon, resulting in increased excretion of water from the stool. Clinically, according to the duration of the disease, diarrhea is divided into acute and chronic. The causes of diarrhea include bacterial or virus infection, food poisoning, lactose intolerance, cold and other digestive diseases.

Diagnosis of Diarrhea

The cause of diarrhea can be determined by the following tests:

  • Blood routine. The type of infection can be judged according to the total number of white blood cells, neutrophils, and eosinophils in the peripheral blood. A preliminary judgment can be made on whether it is a bacterial infection, a viral infection or a parasite infection.
  • Stool routine. The etiology can be preliminarily judged according to the characteristics of the stool. The stool of virus-infected patients is mostly yellow watery, without pus and red blood cells. After bacterial infection, feces can show different characteristics, such as watery stools, pus and blood stools, bloody stools and so on.
  • Pathogen examination. The pathogen can be identified by examining the antibody of the blood species. Or by extracting the species from the stool to detect the pathogen DNA to determine the pathogen.
  • Intestinal absorption function test. The absorption function of the intestine can be understood by methods such as fecal fat determination, bile salt absorption test, vitamin B12 absorption test, and d-xylitol absorption test.
