Chikungunya Fever

Chikungunya FeverChikungunya is caused by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). It is an acute infectious disease characterized by fever, rash, and joint pain, but usually not fatal. Chikungunya epidemic was first confirmed in Tanzania in 1952, and the virus was isolated in 1956. The disease is mainly prevalent in Africa and Southeast Asia, and has caused a large-scale epidemic in the Indian Ocean in recent years. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main vectors of this disease, which are mainly transmitted through the bite of the infected Aedes mosquito. There are no reports of direct human-to-human transmission.

Diagnosis of Chikungunya Fever

There are several ways to test chikungunya fever:

  • Blood routine test. The white blood cell count is often normal. The total white blood cell count, lymphocytopenia, and platelet are slightly decreased in a few patients.
  • Biochemical test. Some patients have elevated serum ALT, AST, and creatine kinase (CK).
  • Cerebrospinal fluid test. The cerebrospinal fluid test in patients with meningoencephalitis is consistent with the changes of viral injury.
  • Serological test. Serum-specific IgM antibodies are detected by ELISA, immunochromatography and other methods. The results of the capture method to detect IgM antibodies are reliable. Serum-specific IgG antibodies are detected by ELISA, immunofluorescence antibody determination, immunochromatography, and other methods.
  • Nucleic acid test. Use RT-PCR and Real-time PCR and other nucleic acid amplification methods to test the virus. Generally, the viral nucleic acid can be detected in the patient's serum within 4 days after the onset of the disease.
  • Virus isolation. Serum samples from patients within 2 days of onset of illness were collected, and sensitive cells such as Vero, C6/36, BHK-21, and HeLa are used for virus isolation.
