Cushing's Disease

Cushing's disease, also known as hypercortisolism syndrome. According to the etiology, Cushing's syndrome can be divided into two categories: ACTH-dependent and ACTH-independent. ACTH-dependent Cushing's disease is caused by excessive secretion of ACTH or corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the hypothalamic-pituitary or some tumor tissues other than the pituitary gland, resulting in bilateral adrenal hyperplasia and excessive secretion of glucocorticoids. The clinical manifestations of Cushing's disease include full moon face, central obesity, purple streaks, hypertension, osteoporosis and secondary diabetes mellitus. This is a debilitating disease that rarely resolves spontaneously. If it is not diagnosed and treated in time, the fatality rate is high.

Diagnosis of Cushing's Disease

Because it has similar signs and clinical symptoms to other diseases, diagnosing Cushing's disease may be a long and difficult process. The diagnosis methods are as follows:

• Urine and blood tests. These tests measure hormone levels in urine and blood, and show whether the body produces too much cortisol.
• Saliva test. In people without Cushing's disease, cortisol levels will drop significantly at night. Therefore, collecting saliva samples in the middle of the night to detect whether the cortisol level is too high could tell if a person has Cushing's disease.
• Imaging tests. CT scan or MRI scan can provide images of the pituitary gland and adrenal gland to detect abnormalities such as tumors.
