Schistosomiasis

SchistosomiasisSchistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma. It is mainly prevalent in Asian, African, and Latin American, affecting about 200 million people. There are two main types of schistosomiasis. One is intestinal schistosomiasis, which is mainly caused by Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum. The other is urinary schistosomiasis, which is caused by Schistosoma haematobium. Schistosomiasis is mainly manifested as dermatitis at the invasion site, accompanied by fever, systemic rash, abdominal pain, diarrhea, tenderness in the liver and other symptoms. People who have been infected with schistosomiasis repeatedly or in large numbers, if they are not diagnosed and treated in time, as the disease progresses, the patient will have symptoms of severely impaired liver function.

Diagnosis of Schistosomiasis

In the high-incidence area of the disease, doctors can preliminarily judge whether there is schistosomiasis by asking about the history and symptoms. Subsequently, the disease can be diagnosed by detecting whether the antibody or antigen of schistosomiasis in the serum is positive, and observing whether there are eggs in the stool or rectal biopsy tissue. The specific diagnosis method is:

  • Etiological diagnosis. Examination of schistosomiasis eggs and cercariae from the feces, and examination of eggs from the rectal mucosa biopsy are the basis for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Commonly used pathogenic inspection methods include modified Kato method, nylon bag egg incubation method, plastic cup top tube incubation method and so on.
  • Immunological diagnosis. Immunological diagnosis involves the detection of circulating antibodies, circulating antigens and circulating immune complexes in the patient's serum. The commonly used diagnostic methods include indirect hemagglutination test (IHA), enzyme-linked immunosorbent test (ELISA), colloidal dye test strip assay (DDIA), dot gold immunofiltration test (DIGFA).
  • Imaging test. Check the liver for fibrosis or cirrhosis by ultrasound or CT.
