Meningitis

Meningitis refers to diffuse inflammatory changes in the leptomeninges. It is caused by various pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, spirochetes, and protozoa that invade the pia mater and spinal cord membrane. Symptoms such as fever, headache, meningeal irritation, and epilepsy may occur. Bacterial meningitis is a particularly serious disease that requires timely treatment. If it is not treated in time, it may die within a few hours or cause permanent brain damage. Although viral meningitis is quite serious, most people can recover completely if treated in time, and only a few patients will have sequelae. Meningitis can involve the dura mater, arachnoid and pia mater.

Diagnosis of Meningitis

Meningitis can be detected in the following ways:

• Blood routine. In the acute phase, the white blood cell count in peripheral blood is significantly increased, and immature cells may appear mainly due to neutrophils.
• Hypersensitive C-reactive protein. Generally, patients with meningitis can see an increase in Hs-CPR.
• Virus antibody test. Patients with viral meningitis can be found to be positive for viral antibodies.
• Tuberculosis test. Some patients with combined active or severe combined meningitis can be tested positive for tuberculosis.
• Bacterial antigen test. Detect the bacterial antigens in the samples by ELISA, PCR, convective immunoelectrophoresis and other methods.
• Electroencephalogram (EGG). If the patient has an epileptic seizure, the diagnosis can be assisted by EEG.
• Imaging tests. Including MRI, CT or X-ray to assist in the diagnosis of meningitis.
