Thalassemia

ThalassemiaThalassemia is one of the most common and harmful monogenic genetic diseases in the world. It is genetic hemolytic anemia caused by the reduction of globin chain synthesis due to mutations or defects in the globin gene. There are different types of thalassemia, which can be divided into α, β, and others. Among them, β thalassemia the most severe type. According to the estimation of WHO, about 4.5% of the world’s population carry genes that cause hemoglobinopathy, and at least 200,000 children with severe thalassemia are born each year.

Diagnosis of Thalassemia

Thalassemia is a genetic disease and is not difficult to diagnose clinically. It can be diagnosed based on family history, clinical manifestations and laboratory screening. Common diagnostic methods include:

  • Routine blood examination. The routine blood examination is the preferred method of thalassemia screening. The main characteristics of thalassemia are microcytes and hypopigmentation.
  • Hemoglobin analysis. Through hemoglobin electrophoresis technology, capillary electrophoresis technology, high-performance liquid chromatography, hemoglobin can be analyzed for diagnosis.
  • Erythrocyte osmotic brittleness test. Patients with thalassemia often have reduced erythrocyte permeability.
  • Genetic diagnosis. Thalassemia can be further diagnosed by restriction enzyme spectrometry, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and oligonucleotide probe hybridization.
