Hepatitis A

Hepatitis AHepatitis A is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It is an infectious disease mainly caused by liver inflammation. Clinically, fatigue, loss of appetite, and abnormal liver function are the main manifestations, jaundice occurs in some cases. Hepatitis A is an acute infectious disease and asymptomatic infection is common. Any age can suffer from this disease, but it mainly affects children and adolescents. Hepatitis A is mainly transmitted through the digestive tract. Water or food contaminated by the virus can cause an outbreak. Winter and spring are often the peak periods of hepatitis A. Maintaining good hygiene, including frequent hand washing, is one of the best ways to prevent hepatitis A. With the use of inactivated vaccines all over the world, the epidemic of hepatitis A has been effectively controlled.

Diagnosis of Hepatitis A

There are several ways to diagnose hepatitis A:

  • Blood routine and urine routine: The white blood cell count in peripheral blood generally decreases or is in the normal range. It may be accompanied by a slight increase in the proportion of lymphocytes or monocytes. The urine urobilinogen increases in the early stage of the disease, and the urine bilirubin and urobilinogen increase in the jaundice .
  • Liver function test. Patients with hepatitis A-related symptoms such as jaundice, fatigue, liver area pain, etc., undergo liver function tests. For liver function tests, the detection of serum ALT, AST, and total bilirubin levels is most useful.
  • Antibody test. Patients with obvious symptoms should identify the pathogen, draw venous blood, and detect HAV antibodies in their serum. Generally, enzyme-linked immunoassay or molecular diagnostic methods are used for testing. If anti-HAV lgM is positive, hepatitis A can be clearly diagnosed. In addition, anti-HAV-IgA can be detected in the fecal extract of patients with hepatitis A, which can be used as an auxiliary diagnosis of hepatitis A.
