Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic CancerThe pancreas is an organ located behind the lower abdomen. It releases enzymes that aid digestion and produces hormones that help control blood sugar. Pancreatic cancer is a malignant tumor of the digestive tract that is difficult to diagnose and treat. About 90% of it is ductal adenocarcinoma originating from the glandular epithelium. Pancreatic cancer is extremely malignant, with insidious onset, difficult early diagnosis and rapid progress, and short survival time. It is known as the king of cancer. The etiology of pancreatic cancer is not yet fully clear. Epidemiological surveys show that the incidence of pancreatic cancer is mostly related to factors such as long-term smoking, poor diet, obesity, and chronic pancreatic damage, etc.

Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer

The diagnosis of pancreatic cancer includes the following:

  • Physical examination. In addition to weight loss, yellowish skin and sclera, and abdominal tenderness. The doctor can feel the enlarged liver and gallbladder, and sometimes a hard mass in the upper abdomen.
  • Blood test. Take blood samples to check for abnormal levels of bilirubin and other substances. Bilirubin is a chemical that may reach high levels in pancreatic cancer patients due to the blockage of the common bile duct by the pancreas. In addition, it is necessary to check some tumor markers, such as CEA, CA199, EEF1γ, etc., which can be used to assist diagnosis, detect treatment efficacy and recurrence, especially CA199 is the most commonly used.
  • Imaging diagnosis. Including B ultrasound, enhanced CT, MRI, MRCP, PET-CT and endoscopic ultrasound.
  • Pathological examination. This is the gold standard for diagnosing pancreatic cancer, including EUS or CT-guided needle biopsy, ascites cytology, laparoscopic exploratory biopsy, etc.
