The proteins encoded by this gene family are natural inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a group of peptidases involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix. In addition to inhibiting most known MMPs, the proteins it encodes also promote cell proliferation in a variety of cell types and may have anti-apoptotic functions. Transcription of this gene is highly induced in response to many cytokines and hormones.
