Atherosclerosis

Healthy arteries are elastic, but over time, the arterial walls will harden. This condition is usually called arteriosclerosis. The lesions of the affected artery start from the intima, where there is lipid accumulation, fibrous tissue hyperplasia and calcium deposition, forming plaques. Because of the yellowish appearance of lipid accumulation in the intima of the artery, it is called atherosclerosis. It is the most common disease in the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, which mainly affects the large and middle arteries in the body. There are no obvious symptoms in the early stage of atherosclerosis. With the stenosis of blood vessels, different organs may be involved in the corresponding ischemia symptoms, such as dizziness, headache, chest tightness, chest pain, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, bad lower limbs, etc. Early intervention and changes of an unhealthy lifestyle are the keys to preventing and treating atherosclerosis.

Diagnosis of Atherosclerosis

There are several methods to detect atherosclerosis:

General examination. Patients often have increased blood cholesterol and triacylglycerol, decreased high-density lipoprotein, and abnormal lipoprotein electrophoresis patterns. Most patients present with hyperlipoproteinemia.

Blood test. It is helpful to find the risk factors of disease, such as abnormal conditions of blood lipids, blood sugar, homocysteine and other indicators.

X-ray examination. Vascular shadow widening and calcification due to atherosclerosis can be seen.

Arteriography. It can show the lumen stenosis, diseased location and scope of the limb arteries, renal arteries and coronary arteries due to atherosclerosis.

Doppler ultrasound examination. It is helpful to judge the smooth flow of the carotid artery, limb artery and renal artery.
