Cytomegalovirus Infection

CytomegalovirusCytomegalovirus(CMV) is a DNA virus of the herpes virus group. Cytomegalovirus infection has received increasing attention. After infection, the virus is confined to the salivary glands, and some cause systemic infections. CMV can be widely present in all organs and tissues of the infected patients, and infection can directly cause damage to the host cells. In addition, it may also produce pathogenic effects through immunopathological mechanisms. Since cytomegalovirus can cause stillbirth, miscarriage, premature delivery through intrauterine infection, it can also cause congenital malformations, the prevention and treatment of this disease affects prenatal and postnatal care and population quality.

Diagnosis of Cytomegalovirus Infection

CMV infection can be detected by the following methods:

  • Blood routine. Severe patients may have an increased number of white blood cells and abnormal lymphocytes in the blood. Infants and young children are often accompanied by anemia and decreased platelet count.
  • PCR detection. The use of PCR technology for CMV gene detection can provide direct evidence of the presence of the virus in the patient; its sensitivity is very high. The test report can be made within a few hours, and it has become an important means for clinical diagnosis of CMV infection or virulent state.
  • Cytomegalovirus culture. The disease can be diagnosed by collecting urine, saliva, blood or biopsy tissue specimens, and inoculation of human diploid fibroblasts for in vitro culture and virus isolation.
  • Pathological tests. Pathological test of cell smear or biopsy can be expected to find characteristic giant cell transformation cells and eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the nucleus, which is helpful for the diagnosis of the disease.
  • Immune check. The use of cellular immunohistochemistry technology to detect CMV antigens can increase the positive detection rate and confirm the diagnosis accordingly.
