Tetanus

TetanusTetanus is an acute infectious and toxic disease caused by Clostridium tetani. Clostridium tetani invades the human body through the skin or mucous membranes and reproduces toxins under hypoxic conditions, resulting in persistent rigidity and paroxysmal spasms of skeletal muscles throughout the body. Simply put, the muscles are so stiff that they cannot move autonomously. Critically ill patients may suffer from suffocation and respiratory failure and even cause death. Clostridium tetani is widespread in the natural environment, and both humans and animals can get sick from infection from it. When the wound is deep and contaminated, it is necessary to be vaccinated against tetanus in time to prevent the outbreak of tetanus.

Diagnosis of Tetanus

Tetanus can be detected by the following methods:

  • Clinical examination. Patients can be diagnosed as tetanus based on typical manifestations such as clenched teeth, wry smiles, and painful muscle contractures, etc.
  • Molecular biology test. The tissues in the wound can be cultured with Clostridium tetani and carried out PCR detection, but the positive rate is not high, and the positive can only indicate that the wound is infected with Clostridium tetani, and it cannot confirm tetanus. Therefore, the significance of this method is limited.
  • Serum tetanus IgG antibody test. If the in vivo neutralization test or modified ELISA is used, it is generally believed that when the antibody level exceeds 0.01 IU/ml, it has a protective effect on the body, and the possibility of tetanus is small.
