West Nile Fever

West Nile fever is an acute febrile disease caused by the West Nile virus (WNV). WNV is in the salivary glands of mosquitoes, mosquitoes transmit the virus to humans or animals during their bites, leading to disease or hidden infection. The virus enters the brain parenchyma through the blood-brain barrier and can invade the central nervous system, causing symptoms of fever or encephalitis. The disease is endemic in Africa, Southern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, West Asia, Oceania, and other places.

Diagnosis of West Nile Fever

There are several methods for testing West Nile fever:

• Laboratory test. The number of white blood cells is decreased, lymphocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid of encephalitis patients increase, and the protein increases.
• Immunological test. The serologic antibody detection method is used to detect the acute and convalescent serum of patients, and the two sera are detected simultaneously. The convalescent serum is considered positive when the titer of specific IgG antibodies increased more than 4 times compared with that of the acute period, which is helpful for the diagnosis of the disease.
• Etiological examination. From the end of incubation to the 5th day after the onset, the virus is isolated from the blood or cerebrospinal fluid of the patient, and the positive rate is relatively high. The identification of the newly isolated virus generally uses the known serum for neutralization experiments.
• Molecular biology examination. The specific primers of West Nile fever virus are designed for RT-PCR test of serum or cerebrospinal fluid samples, with a high positive rate and specific diagnostic value.
