Strep Throat

Strep throat, a common disease, is an acute inflammation of the respiratory tract caused by streptococcal infection. The main symptoms are pharyngitis, fever, swollen neck lymph nodes with tenderness and others. Stress, overwork, exhaustion and viral infection are the causes of this disease. Strep throat mostly occurs in winter and spring, it is contagious and can be sporadic or endemic. Adolescents and children are susceptible, and those under 1 year old and over 50 years old rarely get the disease. Diagnosis of Strep Throat

There are several detection methods for strep throat:

• Physical examination. Acute congestion of the pharyngeal mucosa was observed, especially severe swelling of the mucosa behind the pharyngeal lateral wall and pharyngeal palatine arch, uvula edema, sagging, and weakness. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck are tender.
• Rapid streptococcus detection. The time required is short, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunohistochemical assay or chemical luminescence DNA probe method are used. The detection sensitivity is between 90% and 99%. For example, rapid antigen detection, this test can detect strep bacteria in minutes by looking for substances (antigens) in the throat.
• Throat culture. It is the standard test for strep throat. Use a sterile cotton swab to wipe the back of the throat and tonsils to obtain samples of secretions. The samples are then cultured in the laboratory to observe whether there are streptococci, but the results may take up to two days. This method can prevent the abuse of antibiotics.
