Mastitis

MastitisMastitis is an inflammation-related disease or complication of breast tissue, mainly caused by obstruction of ducts and possibly associated with infection. This is one of the most common problems breastfeeding mothers face. Mastitis is usually characterized by pain, swelling, or redness. Mastitis can be seen in women of any age. According to data from a 2017 survey. the incidence of lactation mastitis is 9.5% to 33%, meaning that for every 10 lactating women, one to three will suffer from mastitis. The disease can be avoided or alleviated by early prevention or timely treatment after discovery, and the prognosis is generally good.

Diagnosis of Mastitis

The immune system's response to inflammation is an increase in the white blood cell count. This defense mechanism is accompanied by the release of several enzymes, including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The more severe the inflammation, the higher the level of this enzyme. LDH concentration in milk has been shown to be an effective marker of tissue breakdown, indicating the presence of active infection. LDH is related to total milk cell count, but is not easily affected by other conditions. LDH levels usually rise earlier than the white blood cell count, making them an excellent marker for early detection and screening of breast tissue infections.

In addition, breast ultrasound, mammography, histopathological examination, bacterial culture and other methods can be used to detect mastitis.
