The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the S100 protein family containing two EF-hand calcium binding motifs. S100 proteins are located in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cells, and participates in the regulation of cell cycle progression, differentiation and other cellular processes. The S100 gene includes at least 13 clusters located on chromosome 1q21. However, this gene is located at 4p16.
