The HEXB gene encodes a subunit of the hexosaminidase enzyme, which is involved in the breakdown of gangliosides. It is responsible for the degradation of GM2 gangliosides, and there are many other molecules containing terminal n-acetylhexosamine in the brain and other tissues. With reference to HEXB and glycosylation domains, mw63-67kda precursors will have some different bands; 59-63 kDa signal peptide is removed, 50-55kda subunit (or signal and propeptide removal), 20-25 kDa subunit B chain , Chain A subunit ~ 30kda.
