TSPAN7 is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetrapolyphosphatase family. Most of these members are cell surface proteins, which are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. TSPAN7 is a cell surface glycoprotein that may play a role in controlling the growth of neurites. TSPAN7 may be involved in cell proliferation and cell movement. It is not only expressed in T cells, but also in acute myeloid leukemia cells of some patients. Antibodies can only recognize TSPAN7 protein, not TSPAN6 protein.
