TRO (melanoma antigen family D) encodes a membrane protein that mediates the adhesion between trophoblast cells and endometrial epithelial cells. The encoded protein is involved in cell signal transmission during embryo implantation and may also be involved in the formation of cancer. This gene is located near several other closely related genes on the x chromosome, and alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variations.
