Trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) and TFF1 and TFF2 belong to a small group of mucin-related peptides. TFF3 is mainly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract. It maintains the integrity of the mucous layer in the mucous cells of the small and large intestines, and works with mucin to protect the gastrointestinal epithelial cells from various harmful substances. The overexpression of TFF3 occurs at sites of gastrointestinal injury, such as peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease. Patients with these diseases have elevated serum TFF3 levels. According to reports, TFF3 is also overexpressed in patients with intestinal, pancreatic and prostate cancers. In vitro studies have shown that in breast cancer cells, the expression of TFF3 is regulated by the level of estrogen.
