TFF1 is a small secreted protein in the trefoil peptide family, which is characterized by the presence of 1 to 6 cysteine-rich P domains. TFF1 is often lost expression in gastric cancer, possibly through DNA methylation mechanism, so it is considered to be a tumor suppressor gene. The function of TFF1 was originally thought to be an oncogene of breast cancer.
