Trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) is a small secreted protein. The most abundant expression of TFF1 is found in the gastrointestinal tract (especially the stomach, colon, and pancreas), where it co-localizes with mucin, usually with MUC5AC. TFF1 is significantly contained in ulcer-related cell line UACL, in which EGF (epidermal growth factor) is also present. A study of patients with Crohn's disease and inflammatory bowel disease showed that the level of TFF1 in the serum is elevated in an inflammatory state. Another study found that TFF1 levels are higher in patients with sepsis and are related to the prognosis of sepsis. High levels of TFF1 in serum are also found in patients with prostate cancer and other types of cancer, but its prognostic value has not been confirmed
