This gene belongs to the TIMP gene family. The proteins encoded by this gene family are natural inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases, which are a group of peptidases involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix. In addition to its inhibitory effect on metalloproteinases, the encoded protein also has the unique effect of directly inhibiting the proliferation of endothelial cells among members of the TIMP family. Therefore, the encoded protein may be essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis because it inhibits the proliferation of quiescent tissues in response to angiogenic factors and inhibits the activity of proteases in the process of extracellular matrix remodeling.
