Triiodothyronine(T3), along with Thyroxine(T4), is one of the two major hormones produced by the thyroid gland and is a diagnostic marker used to determine hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. When the concentration of thyroid hormone in the blood increases, the hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary gland through the secretion of Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone and TRH to synthesize and secrete Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. This secreted TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to synthesize and secrete thyroid hormones T3 and T4. If the thyroid gland produces excessive T3, symptoms related to hyperthyroidism such as insomnia, weight loss, and nervousness may occur. Conversely, if T3 is not sufficiently produced, hypothyroidism such as weight gain, fatigue, and dry skin can cause.
