Human surfactant protein D (SP-D) is a member of the glycoprotein and calcium-dependent collagen subfamily. Studies have shown that the expression of SP-D is related to many lung diseases. In the lungs, SP-D participates in the innate response to inhaled microorganisms and organic antigens. SP-D works by gathering bacteria and viruses, white blood cell functions and stimulating allergen responses. SP-D binds to the surface sugar conjugates of various microorganisms (such as influenza virus, HIy HSV, RSv. Mycoplasma pneumoniae) and oligosaccharides associated with the surface of many organic antigens and enhances its phagocytosis.
