Surfactant protein A is the main protein component of mammalian lung surfactants. Human SP-A is mainly expressed in the lung, mainly in type II alveolar cells and non-ciliated bronchial epithelial cells. SP-A is considered to be an important host defense component against respiratory allergens and pathogens. SP-A is involved in regulating the function of immune system cells, especially dendritic cells and T cells.
