STMN1 usually regulates microtubule dynamics by isolating free tubulin heterodimers or promoting microtubule mutations. STMN1 is highly expressed in fetal and adult brain, spinal cord and cerebellum. Depending on the specific combination of phosphorytable sites, many different forms of phosphorylation can be observed. The phosphorylation of stathmin is involved in the response to NGF, neuronal polarization and microtubule polymerization inhibitory activity. Increased expression of STMN1 has been observed in a variety of human malignancies, such as primary colorectal tumors and metastatic tissues, but its relationship with melanoma is still unclear.
