Enzyme immunoassay qualitatively and quantitatively determine IgG antibodies against SS-A/Ro in human serum. The SS-A/Ro antibody is directed against two distinct proteins, Ro52 and Ro60, which are physically complexed with certain small hY-ribonucleic acids. These antibodies show a high prevalence (> 70%) for Sjögren syndrome (SS), an inflammatory autoimmune disease of Sjögren’s syndrome. They are also related to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Especially some of its variants (such as subacute skin LE): the prevalence is about 80%). Sometimes, if the amount of antigen in the substrate is insufficient, the SS-A/Ro antibody cannot be detected by immunofluorescence (IFA). Therefore, if SS or SLE is still suspected when IFA is negative, an appropriate enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) may be useful.
