During the transition from gametes to embryos, SPIN1 plays an important role in cell cycle regulation. SPIN1 induces necrotic cell death through autophagy. It plays an important role in the necrotic cell death of cultured human cells. SPIN1 binds to the anti-apoptotic protein BCL2 and the apoptosis regulator BCLXL, and induces cell death through a pathway independent of mitochondrial cytochrome c release and caspase activation.
