The protein encoded by this gene is a sodium-phosphate cotransporter, which absorbs phosphate from the interstitial fluid and is used for cellular functions such as cell metabolism, signal transduction, nucleic acid and lipid synthesis. The encoded protein is also a retroviral receptor, making human cells vulnerable to gibbon ape leukemia virus, monkey sarcoma-associated virus, feline leukemia virus B subgroup, and 10A1 murine leukemia virus.
